How to solve a problem sum involving fractions? Recommended for P5 & P6

Upper Primary Maths Problem Sum 👉

Mr Tan had 630 chickens and ducks. He sold 4/9 of his chickens and 1/3 of his ducks. If the number of chickens and the number of ducks sold were the same, find

a) the number of chickens he had.

b) the number of ducks unsold.

Firstly, we are told that the fraction part of chickens sold is 4/9 whereas the fraction part of ducks sold is 1/3. We can convert 1/3 to an equivalent fraction by multiplying the numerator n the denominator by 4. Thus 4/9 of the sold chickens has the same quantity as 1/3 or 4/12 of the sold ducks.
